In a manner all his own, Kader Attou infuses hip-hop aesthetics into contemporary dance pieces. With Symfonia, he revives a successful show that draws on the emotional power of Henryk Górecki’s hypnotic Symphony No 3. Solemn and heartbreaking, this score is a tribute to the Mother and womanhood. The acrobatic spinning of breakdance intertwines with the aerial movement of classical ballet. Although the ten men and women on stage mostly wear sneakers, the music propels them into a world of interiority and mystery, in a resolutely languorous, expansive and fraternal dance.
The great pioneer of the New French Dance movement, Jean-Claude Gallotta, returns to the Escher Theater with a joyful, carnal and intimate ballet, drawing on his encounters with major film directors.
